Volunteering for United Voice

United Voice??? Erm what is that?? This may be your reaction when you see this post. Well, United Voice is the first society that led persons with learning disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Autism, Attention Deficit Disorder, Global Developmental Delay and Cerebral Palsy. This society allow the children with learning disabilities to apply self-advocacy activities. By doing so, they can learn to be more independent and voice up for themselves. United Voice also created an Employment Project for the members to provide employment for the member with learning disabilities. They have two departments which are Card & Craft Studio, Bakery and Art Gallery. The products that hand made by the employees included saori (Japanese weaving), bookmarks, greeting cards, cookies and art pieces.

So for the past one week, Yin Yee, Hoon Mun, Yee Yein, Eugene, Joe and I chooses Subang Parade for the volunteering work, helping United Voice to promote their selling and create awareness to the public about the potential of persons with learning disabilities.

On the 27th and 28th of Nov 2012, I helped on National Kidney Foundation (NKF) fundraising which held on IMU, organised by Asian Medical Students' Association(AMSA). The job that we need to do is to promote the selling and give out the brochure. The items that we sold were food, drinks and some NKF products.

Volunteering at Zoo Negara Malaysia

Due to my elective module, I was assigned with 20 days of volunteering work and I have chosen to work for 7 out of 20 days in Zoo Negara Malaysia.  I went there with a group of my course mate. There are several departments that we can serve as a volunteer. I had worked at Carnivore, Children’s world, Aquarium, Savannas,Holding (Bear) and Mammal Kingdom departments. In different department I have different experiences and will face different kind of animal. The job scope that included in the volunteering work are cleaning the cage, sweeping, preparing toys for animal, preparing food for the animal and of course feeding the animals. Undeniable that serving as a volunteer in Zoo Negara is very tiring and sometime the work can be quite heavy but throughout the process I tried to enjoy the work by interacting with my friends, the workers and the animals. We are also given a chance to get near to the animals such as leopards, hyenas, pumas, rhino and tigers. These precious experiences are simply awesome as we cannot be able to do that if we visited to Zoo Negara as a visitor. Besides that, by witnessing the working attitude of the zoo keeper makes me feel warm. The way they treat the animal with care, love and patience impressed me a lot and make me realised the important of showing care to the animals.
